Short Review: iPad Smart Case

One week ago I bought a new iPad along with a Smart Case. The Smart Case is made of polyurethane and wraps around the front and back of the iPad, addressing the main issue with the Smart Cover. Unfortunately, this product fails badly on execution. First of all, once you put the Smart Case on, it becomes really hard to open the cover. Unlike the Smart Cover, which can be opened with almost no effort by grabbing the right edge or corner, the Smart Case requires that you stick a fingernail between the cover and the side of the case, or hold the left side of the cover steady as you apply pressure and friction to the right side of the cover. This is absolutely terrible and increases the difficulty of accessing the iPad. Another issue is that when you close the cover, it may overlap the side of the case, which is the correct behavior, or it might get stuck and cause the “hinge” to rise. Speaking of which, the “hinge” is nowhere near as elegant as the magnets of the Smart Cover. In short, you should not buy the Smart Case. Instead, buy a Smart Cover, and use the difference in price to pick up a sleeve instead.
