Back to Blogging
I am an indecisive person.
Why? Over the past few years I’ve used many many blogging platforms but still was not satisfied.
I started with a Yahoo Geocities site (yep!) linked to a Yahoo 360 blog. I hated the inflexibility and was compelled to switch over to Blogger. I think that was when I started dabbling in web design, as I had loads of fun getting image flips to work on those pesky buttons. And then one day, I heard about WordPress and decided to check it out. By “check it out,” I mean deleting my Blogger account and signing up for a WordPress account. It was a mistake. No longer did I have the ability to edit the HTML and CSS! Embeds did not work! Ah, the tyranny! So when I got a Linux server up running WordPress.org, I made the switch again. I could once again create CSS Image Sprites. Of course, problems cropped up. Running the old Linux server 24/7 easily amounted to $1000 just in electricity bills. So I took a look at GoDaddy and moved my blog there. Still, I resented the fact that dollars were being used each month. I discovered NearlyFreeSpeech.NET. Extremely cheap hosting? We’re talking pennies? Totally awesome! At the same time, I discovered Tumblr. Meshing those two things together, I created a static landing page for my domain name with a link to my new Tumblr blog. Still not satisfied. Along came Josh Helfferich, trumpeting the amazing Posterous. I used it for a while, but soon came to the realization that it was just a copy of Tumblr, but worse in some areas. At this point, I felt like giving up blogging. My writing was terrible, and besides, I had no time anyway. All I churned out were low-quality posts that weren’t up to my standards. I hit the [delete] key.
Yet here I am again, writing. Why? Simple: because I can express my views. That’s what writing is all about. Without a place to express your views, you have no voice in the world. And while I’m still hard-pressed for time, I’ve upped my commitment to quality: fewer, more high quality posts totally defeat lower quality, more frequent posts. Presenting Daylen Yang, version 8.
